3D Shoes That Mimic Nature

Jessica Rosenkrantz, a lecturer from the School of Architecture and Planning, began her career by somewhat of an “accident.” It all started with a comment by a graduate classmate at the Harvard University School of Design. She was making complex laser-cut models that resembled cellular patterns you would see in biology. One of the failed pieces she cut was curled up on her desk. Somebody noticed it as they were walking by and asked Jessica if it was a bracelet. The conversation caused her to realize she could apply the architectural theories she learned from MIT towards consumer products. Thus her idea for Nervous System, a generative design studio was created.

Nervous System uses computer programs based on processes of nature that generate form and pattern, which can be digitally fabricated. The process was developed while Rosenkrantz was a biology major at MIT, where she also earned an undergraduate in architecture. She was fascinated by how forms of nature emerged which is why she chose biology. Nervous System’s portfolio included work like jewelry and furniture, but they recently collaborated with New Balance to help reinvent the running shoe and develop a customized 3D printed midsole.

Many companies are working on shoes such a Nike, 3DShoes.com, and Adidas. So teaming up with New balance will aid with the 3D printed shoe industry. With New Balance they explored how to create a cushioning midsole, using inspiration from forms in nature that you would see in bones and wood. Jessica hopes that Nervous System will be able to continue to do larger work on an architectural scale. All of the projects use a similar methodology, so every product is generated using the same logic and workflow.
