For active children, keeping up with their ever-growing feet can be quite a challenge. Of course, it’s possible to replace the current pair even though it’s still in good condition. However, it’s important to consider the potential environmental consequences if that is a concern for you. A pair can produce up to 30 pounds of CO2 emissions, which is definitely something you’d want to minimize as much as possible.

The 4Steps 3D-Printed sneakers concept by Michele Di Carlo aims to address the challenge of children outgrowing their shoes and the resulting accumulation of discarded footwear in landfills annually. Since 2017, this project has been dedicated to tackling the issue of eco-sustainability in the footwear industry. The utilization of a 3D printer to create a pair of shoes additionally reduces the ecological footprint.

Creator: Michele Di Carlo

These versatile sneakers are designed to cater to the needs of children aged 6 to 14. With their adjustable size and lightweight construction, they are built to last for nearly five years with proper care, making them a long-lasting option for young wearers. Every individual component of the shoe is designed to be easily replaced for the purpose of recycling and repair, if necessary. The incorporation of molded parts with a honeycomb structure enhances the overall visual appeal of the pair, while also reducing its weight. Michele has developed a prototype of the sneakers utilizing Filafex filament, a thermoplastic polyurethane renowned for its exceptional softness and long-lasting quality.

There are plenty of options for customization beyond just size. Kids can select different styles for the uppers and sides, as well as change the color or add personalized logos or characters. Modifying the size or swapping out different customizable sections is a breeze, requiring only a simple disassembly and reassembly. These versatile sneakers feature retractable heels, allowing for easy adjustment to accommodate different shoe sizes. The components can be effortlessly reassembled with the guidance of an adult.

4Steps sneakers feature a convenient elastic string system that allows for easy adjustments. Simply unclip and clip the strings to achieve the desired fit. During the summer months, the shoes are designed with a breathable mesh to keep your feet cool and comfortable. In contrast, for the winter season, a layer of insulation can be added to provide warmth and protection against the cold. Currently, the trendy sneakers are in the concept and prototyping phase, and we eagerly anticipate their release as a tangible product in the near future.
