COURSE DESCRIPTION

If you are a footwear designer with no experience whatsoever in 3D design and you are on a very limited budget, then this is the course for you! Experienced design engineer Juraj Suska has developed a very professional, yet also very frugal workflow to scan and design shoes in 3D, without needing any expensive equipment and using only software that is either free or highly affordable.

In this course he will first teach you how make a professional 3D scan of a shoe and/or a last using only a phone with a depth camera. Then you will use that scan to create an editable last shape in Blender. This is free open-source 3D design software that is ideal for designing footwear.... if you know which functions to use. Juraj will teach you all that, so you do not have to invent the wheel. Blender is not only free, but also more user friendly than heavier programs like Rhino.

Juraj will also show which digital material databases you could access online to download free digital material swatches.

In the second part of the course you will create a sole and upper on the last you made and on the final afternoon Juraj will demonstrate how to professionally render your designs with Blender and Substance Painter, a sophisticated yet extremely affordable 3D texturing Suite by Adobe.

Maximum number of participants: 12

Level: beginner

Teacher: Juraj Suska

Duration: 4 days, from 9am - 5:30pm

Course dates: Monday - Wednesday, May 4-6 and Friday, May 8 (Thursday off)

 Location: University of Oregon

Course price: $1400/€1295 ATTENTION: THE FIRST 5 PARTICIPANTS GET 10% DISCOUNT, USE CODE BLENDER5 ON CHECKOUT! THIS OFFER IS VALID UNTIL FEBRUARY 29, 2020!

Requirements: we expect that all participants are footwear professionals and know how to design shoes. You do not need any prior knowledge of 3D software though. You are required to bring your own laptop with Blender installed. This is free software that you can download here.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is ideal for people that have an intermediate level when it comes to digital design skills for footwear but would like to optimize their workflow. If you know a little Photoshop, Illustrator, Modo and Zbrush and know the basics of Rhino and/or Blender, then this course will help you to create ultra fast, ultra effective and ultra fun shortcuts that will bring your digital design speed to record heights!

For instance, you can learn how to turn to a grayscale Photoshop image straight into an interactive 3D model. Or you could edit several 3D models at the same time. Your instructor Kostika Spaho is an absolute 3D wizzard; he set up the 3D design team at KEEN and created the most amazing 3D printed shoes together with his wife Ica Paru. Watch this video to hear him explain how he got to his workflow and why he would like to teach it to you:

In the last day of the course Kostika will help participants solve the main bottlenecks they encounter in their digital design process, although it is very likely that the smart combinations and clever insights that he presented will have already solved the majority of those. Here you get a sneak peek of the kinds of smart workflows you will learn:

Level: intermediate, you are required to bring a laptop with Photoshop, Illustrator, Modo, Zbrush and Rhino installed. If you do not own all the software, then please use the free trial versions. You do not need in-depth knowledge of all the required software, but we do expect you have some experience in 3D design already. If you are in doubt whether you should choose the beginner course or this intermediate course, then just send us an email at info@footwearists.com, so we can determine the best choice for you.

Maximum number of participants: 12

Teacher: Kostika Spaho

Duration: 4 days, from 9am - 5:30pm

Course dates: Monday May 4 - Wednesday May 6, and Friday, May 8 (Thursday off)

Location: University of Oregon

Course price: $1400/€1295 ATTENTION: THE FIRST 5 PARTICIPANTS GET 10% DISCOUNT, USE CODE NINJA5 ON CHECKOUT! THIS OFFER IS VALID UNTIL FEBRUARY 29, 2020!

Advanced course: Materializing data into footwear

Register Now

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will teach you how to turn data into algorithms and apply them to a generative shoe model. As the data changes, the shoe changes according to the parameters that you set. The data can be anything, from data about sizes coming from footscans to data about aesthetic preferences coming from social media. You decide what information you want to use to influence your shoes.

This course is a fantastic opportunity for people that already know Rhino and Grasshopper and want to bring their skills to the next level by adding Python scripting, so they can generate custom footwear in a matter of seconds. It is taught by the two most senior 3D people that we have at The Footwearists: Troy Nachtigall and Lorenzo Masini.

Troy recently finished his PhD in materializing data for ultra personalized products, developing a streamlined workflow system that translates data into custom footwear and then monitors how those shoes are used, so every next iteration of the shoes will be even better suited to the wearer. For this course he will give students insight into this system and how they could translate it to their situation.

The first two days you will learn how to create algorithms with Python scripting and apply those to an existing shoe model in Grasshopper. The next two days you will learn how to create your own interactive shoe model in Grasshopper.

Level: advanced, participants should already have experience in Rhino and Grasshopper. Experience in Python scripting can be an advantage, but it is not necessary. You are required to bring your own laptop with Rhino/Grasshopper and Python Scripting installed.

Maximum number of participants: 10

Teachers: Troy Nachtigall and Lorenzo Masini.

Duration: 4 days, from 9am - 5:30pm

Course dates: Monday May 4 - Wednesday May 6, and Friday, May 8 (Thursday off)

Location: University of Oregon

Course price: $2150/€1990 ATTENTION: THE FIRST 5 PARTICIPANTS GET 20% DISCOUNT, USE CODE PYTHON5 ON CHECKOUT! THIS OFFER IS VALID UNTIL FEBRUARY 29, 2020!

Intermediate course: Design for digital manufacturing

COURSE DESCRIPTION

Digital manufacturing methods such as 3D knitting and 3D printing have been around for quite a while now, yet when we look at how they are applied in shoe designs we are barely even scratching the surface of all the possibilities they offer. For instance, a foam midsole might be replaced with a 3D printed lattice, but the rest of the shoe is the same....

This course aims to change that! We have brought together our number one experts on 3D printing and knitting: Nicoline van Enter - founder of The Footwearists - and Jordi Montaner, freelance knitting innovator. Together they will teach participants the ins and outs of various 3D printing and knitting technologies and will then challenge them to rethink everything they thought they knew about footwear and really start designing from the possibilities that those manufacturing methods can offer.

With 3D knitting and printing you could create shoes in entirely different ways, with custom aesthetics and functionalities and with constructions that are much more sustainable than what we see on the market now. They also open up great opportunities for local manufacturing.

This course is very hands-on and you will actually be designing through prototyping. How advanced your prototypes can be, depends on your skill level in 3D design. You can work with 3D design software in this course, but you do not necessarily need to have experience in it. The main goal is to learn to fully understand different 3D printing and knitting technologies so you can be as creative as possible with them, without reinventing the wheel or making shoes that are unwearable or could not be produced. The goal is to come to shoe designs that can actually be manufactured in series, using just knitting machines and 3D printers.

Level: intermediate, we do require that participants have experience in footwear design and any 3D software you know is an advantage, but you could also take the course without knowing 3D design yet.

Maximum number of participants: 10

Teachers: Nicoline van Enter and Jordi Montaner

Duration: 4 days, from 9am - 5:30pm
