First insole thermoregulated by your footstep’s pressure

Insert Solecooler insole in your shoes and keep your feet warmer or cooler/Insérez la semelle et gardez vos pieds au chaud ou au frais

I am launching this Kickstarter campaign because I need you to help me in finalizing my Solecooler project: a shoe insert that will cool off feet in hot weather and warm them in cold weather, only powered by the pressure of each step. We can accomplish this without a battery or chemical compound and without a carbon footprint. The SoleCooler project was born in August 2018 as a response to the new needs created by climate change. Over time, we realized there were applications in all situations where we are faced with extreme weather or extreme temperature conditions. We see applications in so many situations! If you’re a runner that is tired of the discomfort of running on too hot or frozen or if you have a four-legged friend that needs to protect their foot-pads during heatwaves or ice storms– we designed these insoles and boots for you! These insoles and dogs boots generate a cooling effect on one side and a warming effect on the other by taking advantage of the pressure generated by each step.

What is already existing on the market?/Qu’est-ce qui existe déjà?

Of course, you can already buy insoles that contain electronic components to warm your feet  or with electronic components (Peltier effect) to cool  them . However, these devices are cumbersome and heavy thanks to batteries that power them. Their charge capacity is limited to one or two hours, a number well bellow the need for the average workday. On top of that, these devices are not environmently friendly as they have to be recharged often. Even if a small portion of their potential market adopted these devices, they would add hundreds of megawatts of electrical consumption. Faced with these facts, I had to find a way to power the process without external energy sources, one that used the passive and available energy generated by the user’s own body pressure.

SoleCooler project: StrideCooler and PadCooler

SoleCooler is designed to protect feet against extreme cold and heat. People  who are in occupations subject to severe climatic conditions  (firefighters, public works, military, cold storage facilities),  professional and recreational athletes (runners, trekking, skiing), as  well as people  with specific health conditions who  experience increased sensitivity (diabetes, poor circulation) are our priority. Prolonged exposure  to extreme temperatures can cause aggravation, discomfort, limitation and even injury, all of which carry the risk of lost  productivity. To switch from heating to cooling and vice versa, simply flip the sole and insert it into the other shoe.

How does it work?/Comment ça marche?

Existing products that prevent this occurrence only  provide temporary relief and are cumbersome, difficult to use and  energy-hungry.  To meet this need, the SoleCooler project, which is based on thermodynamics, was born. SoleCooler  is an insole placed into footwear to keep feet at a cooler temperature  than the external environment during exposure to hot temperatures and warmer during  exposure to cold temperatures without any input of energy other than  that generated by the person’s own steps.

 Some thermodynamic/Un peu de thermodynamique:

The principle adopted by the patent SoleCooler based on thermodynamics and in particular on the Carnot cycle (like air conditioner).

The pressure generated by each step on the Solecooler compresses the air contained in the cells. The air warms up naturally as it is compressed, much like you can see when inflating a bicycle tire using a manual pump. When the pressure on the Solecooler is released, the air will expand and will cool down like when you are deflating a tire. The cycle is repeated as long as the SoleCooler’s user is walking or running.

Converging / diverging nozzle

To reproduce these phenomena in an insole we devised and patented a new process: closed  cells of which comprise two parts made in two different materials and  joined by a perfectly calibrated nozzle (in the image of a rocket  nozzle). Part  is very flexible and will allow thanks to the pressure of the foot,  compressing the air trapped in the second portion that is less flexible. Once the foot is raised, the compressed air goes back into the flexible portion through the nozzle and therefore cool naturally.

The first proof of concept was obtained with a small prototype of a 1 cm3 cell consisting of a syringe on which a copper cap was attached. A few round trips from the piston quickly yield a temperature difference of 4°C.

Sizing guide

Please find thereafter some help to find the right size. Stridecooler for runners and Padcooler for dogs are designed in the aim to adjust its by cutting. Consequently each model is corresponding to a range size of 2 to 3 sizes. Nevertheless, because it occurs often differences within brands shoes, the only certified size is given in cm (and inch) so it is recommanded to check with a paper model what is the best size fitting in your shoes.

Thank you

I have been able to finance the SoleCooler project from the studies to the trials of the first mold (EU size 41) but I need YOU to finalize this project and make all the molds necessary for the inserts. Even 1$ would mean the world to us to bring this project to success.

So THANK YOU in advance for your help!
