The chemical company Dow has joined up with Nexus Elastomer System and German RepRap to provide the ability to 3D print silicone rubber parts in color, utilizing Dow’s 3D printable SILASTIC 3D 3335 Liquid Silicone Rubber (LSR) material. They also get access to RepRap’s LAM 2D printer and a color dosing system that is developed by Nexus. By combining these three companies, and color packs from Mesgo Iride Colors, users can 3D print products made from LSR material and produce parts in a range of consumer-friendly colors. Dow’s SILASTIC 3D 3335 LSR material is naturally transparent, which makes it great for application transparency is required. This has to potential for end-use applications in mobility, lighting, wearables, consumer electronics, footwear and more.
One of the popular applications for the material is 3D printed silicone midsoles with ECCO and CAD leader Dassault Systems. This innovation, called the Quant-U project, includes a unique service that uses customer data to design and 3D print custom silicone midsoles. This collaboration will be on display at K 2019. Dow will showcase the 3D printable LSR material, which has similar properties to injection molded LSR parts and has the potential to facilitate rapid prototyping and product development.
