Lucie Trejtnarová, a graduate from the Facility of Multimedia Communication, Tomas Bata University of Zlín, Czech Republic, and manufacturer Filamentum have developed a 3D printed shoe collection. The Organic shoe collection was created to make sustainable footwear and accessories. The sandal line integrates 3D printed outsoles from a TPU-based Flexfill 98, Malai also known as coconut leather, and Piñatex, a natural fabric made from pineapple leaves. Lucie’s inspiration for the project came from a trip to Southern India. During an internship with Malai Design & Materials, she was introduced to the raw materials Malai that would help form the Organic footwear brand.

Malai is a biodegradable material known to be flexible, durable, and even water-resistant. It is natural from coconut with a texture comparable to leather. Piñatex is derived from pineapple leaf fiber and is used as an alternative for leather. With these materials, Lucie was able to create sandals to suit the warm and wet conditions of India. Through the University she was able to learn how to use a 3D printed but also how to make 3D models. Lucie was pleased to see how well Flexfill 98 worked with both prototyping and final production of the outsoles. A pilot pair of sandals were made with Malai Design & Materials and are on display at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
